My Secret: How To Make The Best Essential Oil Mix For Fleas and Ticks (DIY!)
I've shown you the products, but when it comes to my pets, I really want to make a "potion" that's safe, natural, and made just for my pet! Here's what I usually do:
My Go-To DIY Mix: Essential Oil Based Flea Deterrent Spray
To make the best essential oil mix for fleas, you can add six to seven drops each of peppermint, eucalyptus, citronella, and lemongrass to about 8 ounces of water. If you want, you can also add 3-4 drops of apple cider vinegar. You can click the images above to check out the products.
Stir or shake well then transfer to a spray bottle. When applying to your pet's coat, try to spray it 6-8 inches away from them and be careful not to get anything on their eyes.
I would warn you though that the scent might be overwhelming for your cats. I only tested this for dogs.
For cats, you can try oils with light smells such as lavender, but be careful still.
You can create your own flea deterrent spray by combining water, vinegar, and a couple of drops of the recommended essential oil of your choice. You can place it in a spray bottle and spray it on your pet’s coat, pet’s beddings, and be sure to avoid putting the flea deterrent spray on your pet’s eyes.
That's it for my best essential oils for fleas mix!
Essential Oil-Enhanced Sh
Essential oils can actually be mixed to your pet's shampoo for additional antiseptic or anti-parasite properties. The recommended essential oil to be used for your essential oil enhanced shampoo is citronella and lemongrass.
The ideal dosage is 1 drop for smaller pets and a larger dosage for large pets.
Essential Oil-Infused Brush
I like this method because it doesn't disturb the natural oil balance of your pet’s skin.
This method involves a brush and placing a thick material like a single layer of towel or a folded sheet.
You can push the material down the teeth of the steel brush with an inch above the base.
Moreover, you will need to place a bowl of warm water and combine a couple of drops of cedar wood or pine oil and soak the prepared brush in this mixture before brushing your pet’s coat. You should rinse the brush thoroughly during the brushing period in a bowl of essential oil infused water.
The essential oil infused brush treatment will disinfect the dog, condition the coat, and collect the parasites and eggs in the brush.
Other Preventive Measures To Avoid Fleas, Mites, and Ticks
Fleas are disgusting.
And if I hurt any flea-lover out there, I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings.
However, I don’t think there’s someone who loves pet parasites with six legs that feed on the blood of their hosts.
What Can Fleas Do?
They jump easily and they have a compressed physiology that makes it easy for them to run through the hair of your innocent pet. Or in my case, my sweet little Labrador. Basically, fleas are built for your pets body!
Fleas have this weird mindset that the hotter and damper, the better. If you’re living in a place where you can get a decent tan without intending to, there’s a high risk of your pet being infested with fleas.
By the way, the line that says, “Tell me who your friends are, and I’ll tell you who you are,” kind of applies to your dog in this situation. I’m referring to its furry dog pals that he often goes to the park with.
Fleas Make Babies On Your Pet!
Because fleas have this flea-law that tells them - “Oh, look. Another dog. Let’s make more babies on his back.”
Good news is that they don’t live very long, they’re weak. On the other hand, female fleas are able to make up to 2,000 eggs – in just 4 months!
That’s. Way. Too. Many. Eggs.
I’d be happy if they were chicken eggs, I’d have unlimited protein for a lifetime.
Apparently, adult fleas only mate after they’ve got a good serving of a large blood meal – they basically mate after dining on your dog! Which is why you need to find the best essential oils for fleas and ticks.
Where Do Fleas Hide?
Overall, they live the go big or go home life, which is why they don’t live long. It doesn’t change the fact though that they can make our pets go bald – pets shouldn’t have to suffer!
Wrapping Up: Best Essential Oils for Fleas, Mites, and Ticks
We love our pets as much as we love ourselves. They make our days brighter, heartbreaks easier, and pockets lighter – because they’re pretty expensive to maintain. But it’s all worth it!
Any of these best essential oils for fleas will help you to prevent those vampire-wannabes out from your pet’s fur. I’m a dog owner, and I can honestly say, I feel like my dog’s invincible!
